Rights Respecting School Award
The Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA) is all about making sure that our children and young people know and understand their rights as global citizens and respect the rights of others.
The award centres around making sure that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is known and understood by all students, and that students fully understand their own responsibilities in making sure that other people’s rights are not denied or neglected. In prioritising a balanced awareness of Rights and Responsibilities in this way we are confident that PHS students will continue to enter adulthood as well-rounded and successful citizens.
Article 29 of the UNCRC underlines our vision as a school:
“Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.”
The initiative was officially launched to students in May 2013. Our new School Charter (download on the left), agreed by students and staff takes effect from September 2013. This Charter underpins all of our policies and practices in ensuring a rights respecting school community. We hope these values and qualities will be useful to parents and carers in establishing a consistent message to our young people at home and at school.
