Psychology
Our Psychology department equips our students with the skills to understand why people think and behave in certain ways.
Curriculum Intent
At Poole High School, our Psychology curriculum encourages students to develop a scientific understanding of human behaviour, thought and experience. Through the study of Psychology, students explore the complex relationship between the mind, brain and behaviour, gaining insight into why people think, feel and act in different ways.
Students investigate a range of psychological theories, concepts and research studies, examining topics that span human development, social influence, memory, attachment, mental health and biological explanations of behaviour. They are encouraged to question assumptions, evaluate evidence and consider different perspectives on some of the most fascinating issues affecting individuals and society.
Our curriculum develops critical thinking, analytical and research skills through the exploration of psychological investigations and contemporary debates. Students learn how psychological knowledge is generated, tested and applied, while developing the confidence to evaluate theories, treatments and explanations using evidence-based reasoning.
Psychology bridges the sciences and social sciences, providing students with the opportunity to explore both biological and environmental influences on behaviour. Through the study of key debates, such as nature versus nurture and free will versus determinism, students develop a deeper understanding of human behaviour and the factors that shape it.
Ultimately, our Psychology curriculum aims to develop curious, reflective and informed learners who can apply psychological knowledge to understand themselves, others and the world around them.
