Physical Education

Our Physical Education department equips our students with the skills to critically analysis and evaluate your physical performance and apply your experience of a practical activity in developing the knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Curriculum Intent

At Poole High School, our Physical Education curriculum develops knowledgeable, analytical and well-rounded students who understand the scientific, psychological and social factors that influence sporting performance. Through the study of both theoretical and practical aspects of Physical Education, students gain a deeper understanding of how the body and mind work together to achieve success in sport and physical activity.

Students explore key areas including anatomy and physiology, exercise science, sport psychology, skill acquisition, biomechanics and the historical development of sport. They learn to apply theoretical concepts to real sporting situations, developing their ability to evaluate performance, solve problems and make informed decisions about physical activity and training.

Alongside academic study, students are encouraged to develop their practical performance skills through participation in competitive and recreational sport. By reflecting on their own experiences and those of others, they gain insight into the factors that contribute to success in physical activity and sport at all levels.

Our curriculum promotes resilience, determination, teamwork and leadership, while encouraging students to adopt healthy and active lifestyles. Through investigation, analysis and practical application, students develop critical thinking and communication skills that are highly transferable beyond the subject.

Physical Education is particularly suited to students with a passion for sport and physical activity who wish to understand the theory behind performance. The course provides an excellent foundation for further study and careers in areas such as teaching, coaching, sports science, physiotherapy, leisure management, health and fitness, and professional sport.

Ultimately, our Physical Education curriculum aims to inspire students to achieve their personal best, develop a lifelong appreciation of physical activity, and gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in sport, further education and future employment.
