Our Computer Science department offers exciting and dynamic teaching that encourages a number of modern technological skills.

Curriculum Intent

At Poole High School, Computer Science equips students with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. More than simply learning how to use technology, students explore how computers work, how software is developed, and how technology shapes the world around us.

The curriculum focuses on developing computational thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, enabling students to break down complex problems and design effective solutions.

Through the study of programming, computer systems, data representation, networks and cybersecurity, students gain a deeper understanding of the principles that underpin modern technology. These transferable skills support learning across the curriculum and prepare students to be confident, responsible and informed users of technology, whether they continue their studies in Computer Science or pursue other pathways in the future.

Key Stage 3

Students study Computer Science throughout Key Stage 3, with two lessons per fortnight in Years 7 and 8. The Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills, helping students understand not only how to use technology but also how it works.

Students explore a range of fascinating questions, including: What is a computer? How does a computer store and process data? What is an algorithm? How do computers represent different types of information? How do computers communicate with each other? How are programs structured? How do computers perform calculations, and what hardware is responsible for carrying them out?

Through these topics, students develop computational thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills while gaining practical experience of programming and computer systems. Each area of study provides a foundation for the more advanced concepts explored at GCSE Computer Science, preparing students for further study and an increasingly digital world.

Key Stage 4

We offer two courses that provide our students with the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of the digital technologies that shape the modern world.

Through the study of both theoretical concepts and practical applications, students explore how computer systems work, how software and networks are developed, and how technology is used by individuals and organisations to solve real-world problems.

Our courses enable students to investigate emerging technologies, cybersecurity, programming, data management and the impact of digital systems on society and business. By developing computational thinking, creativity, analytical skills and technical expertise, students are well equipped for further study and future careers in an increasingly technology-driven and interconnected world.

In GCSE Computer Science you will learn about:

Writing computer programs using Python to solve real problems
How computing devices work internally
Networking such as Wi-Fi, the internet and Bluetooth
Storing data such as images, sound and video
Cyber security and protecting devices
Ethical issues such as electronic waste and AI
Legal issues such as protecting personal data
Storing and retrieving data in databases using SQL

In BTEC Digital Information Technology you will learn about:

Designing apps and websites that can be used by everyone
Planning and managing digital projects
Collecting, analysing and presenting data
Understanding how organisations use information
Legal, ethical and security issues
Protecting information from cyber threats
