Welcome to the Music Department.

Our aim is to teach young people to be creative and work collaboratively as a group whilst learning the importance of music in society.

We also hope to inspire young musicians to develop lifelong passion for music whilst learning the elements of music needed for successful performances/ compositions.

GCSE Foundation

At Key Stage 3 we take a practical and creative approach. We believe that the music curriculum is broad and interesting. There are 6 topics for each year group that follow our schemes of work. These include film music, musical futures, world music, musicals and music technology. There is assessment built into each of these 6 topics and these are of a practical nature that are recorded. The music department also runs a special music class aimed at students who play and instrument/ sing. These students take one extra lesson of music a week and this helps them to develop the essential skills needed at GCSE music and beyond.

GCSE Music (AQA)

Why study GCSE Music?
If you enjoyed KS3 Music and want to take it further and develop your skills – this is for you. If you have always had a passion for performance or composition this is for you. If you play and instrument or sing and have lessons – this is for you.

This course allows your creativity to develop whilst learning compositional techniques and performance skills building confidence to perform. It is also designed to broaden your horizons of music analysis and appreciation. Music technology plays a big part in the music industry and you will learn how to compose using music software.

Topics include:
Unit 1: Understanding music – Western classical tradition 1650 – 1910 with two set musical works. Popular music, set work ‘The Beatles’. General music litening and understanding.
Unit 2: Composing music
Unit 3: Performing music

AQA
Key Stage 5

At A-Level, we study the AQA syllabus. The course is made up of 3 units in Year 12, which are currently all assessed at the end of Year 12. The assessment units are: Mus1 – an exam lasting 1hr 45 mins focusing on the history of music and a listening test (30 %); Mus2 -an externally assessed composition for two or more instruments lasting between 3 and 5 minutes, produced during 20 hours controlled conditions(30 %); Mus3 – 2 separate performances lasting between 5 – 8 minutes each (40%).
The course in year 13 is made up of 3 units: Mus4 – an exam lasting 2hrs 15 minutes focusing on a set orchestral piece of work, blues and Jazz and a listening test (40%); Mus5 – an externally assessed composition lasting between 5 and 8 minutes for 2 or more instruments (30%); Mus6 – an externally assessed solo performance lasting between 10 and 12 minutes (40%).
