Sixth Form: Student Life

We believe that it is important for our students to leave the sixth form ready to stand on their own two feet and, as such, we deliver a program which not only ensures they succeed academically, but also develops other skills they will need in the future.

Our enrichment choices provide a variety of activities including sporting activities, First Aid, voluntary work (in and out of school), Japanese, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Silver Arts Award and cookery. We aim to provide options which can expand each student’s CV and try to encourage them to try new activities which may take them out of their comfort zone.

Over the years we have noticed that outside speakers have had a huge impact on our students and each year we organise a variety of people to come into school. We aim to cover a range of topics and always look for new inspirational speakers. Previous years have covered topics such as handling relationships, night time safety, gap years and motivation. We also run days where all students are taken off timetable. In Year 12 this is based on “Forgiveness” and in Year 13 the day is entitled “Consequences – Safe Drive, Stay Alive” which is delivered by a range of outside agencies. These days are always positively received and valued by the students and leave them thinking and talking about new issues.

In the summer term we run a Challenge Day for the Year 12 students. They complete a range of activities which have been carefully designed to develop skills such as team building, meeting deadlines and organisational skills. At the end of Year 13 we celebrate their time in the sixth form at our leavers BBQ and Prom and also produce a year book as a memory of their time in the school. The students take an active role in the organisation so they can personalise them. All of these activities are designed to broaden our students and develop them into people who are prepared for their future life.

For students with a limited household income, there is a Senior School Bursary fund to help with costs associated with accessing education at Poole High Senior School. To check your eligibility for this please visit: https://www.gov.uk/1619-bursary-fund.
