Physical Education in the Sixth Form

 

In choosing this course, students will develop knowledge which will equip them for undergraduate study in the areas of Physiology, Bio-mechanics, Psychology and Nutrition or employment in the sporting sector. 

Topics include:

  • Applied Anatomy and Physiology

  • Skill Acquisition

  • Sport and Society

  • Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics

  • Sport Psychology

  • Sport and society and technology in sport.

Assessment

Assessment is by means of two exams and a Coursework Module.

Which students do well at A-Level PE?

  • …those who have achieved a minimum of a ‘B’ in GSCE PE and ‘C‘ in Science.

About the Course:

The Diploma in Sport is a two-year programme validated by BTEC. It offers a broad basis of study for the sport sector, and combines practical sports activity alongside academic study. It has the same equivalency as 1 1/2 A –levels and is studied for 9 lessons over 2 weeks.

 You will study 7 units over the 2 years: 4 are mandatory units and 3 are an optional unit. Of the 4        mandatory units, 2 are externally set, marked and assessed by BTEC.

UNIT 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-Being

Externally assessed with a written case study

UNIT 7: Practical Sports Performance

Internally assessed via coursework

UNIT 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry

Internally assessed via coursework

YEAR 2

ASSESSMENT

UNIT 4: Sports Leadership

Internally assessed via coursework

UNIT 8: Coaching for Performance

Internally assessed via coursework 

UNIT 5: Application of Fitness Testing

Entry Requirements:

GCSE Physical Education, or a BTEC First Award in Sport qualification.

Must have achieved English or Maths (preferably both) at a grade 4 or above.  A genuine interest in sport and coaching, alongside a sound knowledge of sport.

The National Diploma in Sport is a two-year, full-time programme validated by BTEC. The course combines academic study and practical sports sessions to provide the core knowledge and study skills to progress to higher education or employment. It has the same equivalency as 3 A levels.

Assessment

You will study 9 units over  2 years; 3 units are externally assessed, 6 units are internally assessed (coursework).

The units will help you to:

  • Develop fitness and sports performance:

  • Sports leadership opportunities, where you will go out into the local community, as well as in KS3 PE lessons and teach children new sporting skills and techniques.

You will be given the opportunity to develop and interpret own and others’ fitness levels and improve practical sports performance using video analysis.

Entry Requirements

  • 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or a BTEC sport first diploma qualification.
  • Achieved a grade 4 in English or Maths (preferably both).
  • A genuine interest in sport and coaching, alongside a sound knowledge of sport.

The National Extended Diploma in Sport is a two-year, full-time programme validated by BTEC. The course combines academic study and practical sports sessions to provide the core knowledge and study skills to progress to higher education or employment. It has the same equivalency as 3 A levels.

Assessment

You will study 14 units over  2 years; 4 units are externally assessed and 10 units are internally assessed (coursework).

The units will help you to:

  • Develop fitness and sports performance:

  • Sports leadership opportunities where you will go out into the local community, as well as in KS3 PE lessons and teach children new sporting skills and techniques.

  • Develop fitness and sports performance:
