A-Level Biology A-Level Chemistry A-Level Physics Applied Science (BTEC)

Applied Science is a course designed for those looking for a career in Science. The course develops your understanding of scientific theory and skills, and coupled with experimental techniques, enables you to be successful in either employment or at university.

Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to perform a variety of biology, chemistry and physics experimental work, and will learn how to work safely within a laboratory environment and to use Maths and statistics to analyse experimental data.

In year 1
• Unit 1 Principles and Applications of Science (Year 12 – externally assessed)
• Unit 2 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (Year 12 – internally assessed)
In year 2
• Unit 3 Science Investigation Skills (Year 13 – externally assessed)
• Final Unit Optional unit yet to be confirmed (Year 13 – internally assessed)
Examples of optional units include Physiology of Human Body Systems, Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Diseases and Infections, Applications of Inorganic Chemistry, Applications of Organic Chemistry, Electrical Circuits and Astronomy and Space Science

Assessment Method
There are four assessed units. The first is assessed by a two hour exam, the second and fourth or option unit are assessed by internal assignments and unit 3 is assessed through scientific investigation
Future Opportunities And Careers
BTEC Applied Science is widely recognised by industry and higher education as a leading vocational qualification at Level 3. Well over 100,000 BTEC students apply to UK universities, every year and go on to be accepted into over 150 UK universities and higher education institutes.
